It probably isn't the cable . . .

Not sure about HD580s, but the HD650s are known to have the same problem. It has to do with the spring that the headphone cord plugs into -- it can become loose and cause the problem you are describing. When I had HD650s, I would take them apart and fix the spring following instructions I found on Head-Fi. You might want to look there. I recently upgraded to HD800s, which has an entirely different mechanism for attaching the headphone cord that eliminates this problem.
