RE: Questions for JA on the "sound" of truly "time-aligned" speakers with perfect step response

I EQ for the response measured with gating from a position relatively close to the speaker depending on the size of the baffle.

I mostly EQ for magnitude (dB), taken on an average of a range about -45 to +45 degrees off axis. If I do correct phase, I usually do it for the response for the angle facing the "sweet spot" chair.

I'd agree about the phase not making a huge deal. I can't say that the phase correction makes much of a difference to me, sometimes I think I can hear it, other times not. If so, seems to be the lower mids that seem a bit more impactful (is that a word?). I took a set of speakers and an FIR equalizer to a local club meeting and played some tracks with and without FIR engaged (same hardware, but with coefficients set to do nothing). Sighted test, identified which was being used. A little over a third of the members though they sounded different, about third weren't sure, the rest said no differences. Of the ones that did say they heard a difference, more preferred it corrected, but a few preferred it uncorrected. Most didn't seem to have a preference. So, not a big endorsement for phase correction. I'm sure it could depend on just how screwed up the phase was in the first place, though. These speakers had a reasonably tight impulse response on their own (but far from linear phase).
