"In the past, I've mulled over the possibility of just correcting for the phase shift of the passive crossover using an all-pass filter, rather than the more heavy-handed approach of impulse response correction. Have you ever tried something like that?"

There's really no difference. You correct the phase, you correct the impulse, they are different views of one and the same thing. An FIR filter can act as an all-pass if you only have it change the phase response (and not the dB magnitude response as well).
