Evidently he has never been to VSAC or RMAF or done any reading on the use of SETs, either. Everyone from the early "audiomaniacs" in Japan to Jean Hiraga in France to most of the "hornies" at the above-mentioned shows have paired SETs and horns. Oh yes, I forgot Western Electric and Altec VOT pairings in every theatre in the country for at least half a century. I have heard the Cain & Cain Abby and (some) Lowther drivers in (some) cabinets sound pretty darn good, but no match for the full range dynamics our your Altecs. xaudiomax's mono-mania for 4" drivers is scarcely the one size fits all solution for every, or even many, listeners.
The clarity and separation of voices you seek is an SET characteristic. Going to pentodes, even if rewired to operate in triode mode, is the wrong direction. Your speakers could easily be driven, and driven well, with Type 45, 2A3 or 300B amps. Depending on what exact speakers you're using, you could experiment and drive the woofer with your 6550 amp and the tweeter with a 2A3 amp, using an active crossover.
