Hi Frank
I'm finally getting back to you, and want to thank you for all the input and suggestions.
Yes, you are right, Telefunken did very detailed and dynamic tubes, and warmer 12ax7's (as well as ECC82's) from other sources are valuable to investigate partnering to Tele EL 84's. But the detail of the tele's in all their tubes is quite amazing. Right now, I am using All-Telefunkens, and have been largely happy with this, apart from finding that one of my ECC82 Tele's doesn't quite sound right at this time-though the other is perfect, (so luckily needing only one in the lone spot I can experiment) and that my phono section with Tele 12AX7 and Tele 6DJ8 still has more tube roar than I would ideally like. But the noise seems 'part of the deal' with any tube duo's there I gather.
The Lexus speaker wire is definately warmer than La, but the demo short runs I tried seemed a lot warmer than my 6 meter runs, by quite a margin. Or so it seemed, but then I've also changed a lot of components.
Doing some cap changes would be interesting, but i can totally relate to your chagrin around waiting 800 hours for new ones to break in. That is a long long time, and my last break in period-for my hemp drivers-was long enough and seemed 800 hours and man, there were some deep valleys. I'm no hurry to do another break in like that.
Thanks again for the recommendation of the RCA 5963 ECC82, the Groove Tube and New Sensor Mullard 12AX7's, as well as the Parts Connexion and The Tubstore. I recall testing my Tele 12AX7's at Pacific TV and while relatively strong, didn't have tons of time on them. I'll probably be cheking and trying out the alternatives you've recommended.
Mike
