Dear RGA,I have a great belief in the sound of natural materials and hemp pulp is more natural than wood pulp in that it does not require mercury and other poisonous substances to make it into pulp, all it requires is water from what I understand.
Read up on hemp, it should gain more popularity, as it is one of nature's true miracle plants, with an incredibly wide variety of uses, clothing, rope, medicine, soap (check out www.drbronner.com!), fuel, you name it and it has been used by man for at least 7 to 8 thousand years (the Chinese used it for rope and clothing for example), and many of our most famous and cherished documents use hemp, Rembrandt's canvasses, the first draft of the US declaration of independence and King James's bible were printed on hemp paper for example and the North America was discovered with the help of sails made from hemp.
In the 1930's new processes allowed paper to be made from wood pulp and the US logging lobby then persuaded Congress to ban commercial use of hemp, the ban was lifted during the Second World War but reintroduced in 1946 and since then the US Government has been actively discouraging the worldwide trade in hemp, yet another example of powerful commercial interests forcing the hand of government to the detriment of all of us.
I think the fact that hemp has a less homogenous fibre structure accounts for its better sound, it is actually slightly heavier, but only affects the efficiency by 0.1dB or so.
The tweeter will stay as it is, I am working on an AlNiCo version with a pure silk diaphragm, but that is some way off being a reality, although a small cone tweeter using hemp might be an interesting idea as well.
Sincerely,
Peter Qvortrup
