Rigidity and high mass in the stands are key elements in obtaining optimum results. Plastic milk crates will fail miserably on both counts.
The AN stands are quite rigid, and with the spikes adjusted for NO give in any direction and the speakers blutak'd to the stands top plate, you'll hear a huge improvement. Filling the stands' columns with sand brings further improvement, while filling them with a mix of fine lead shot and sand brings an additional improvement in tightness, speed, detail and imaging top to bottom that I found rather shocking the first time I tried it.
