RE: A point in every direction is no point at all.

Tom, Yep, lack of precision, not lack of "hours" :). I agree about the remote statement......I have issues with that very thing. With a remote, the control itself can be very fine with little "hours" but the motor can move so fast that the effect is, well, you know...little precision compared to moving the same control manually.

C. Blackplate, I did not say it was pointless at all. It's just that voltage gain is seldom needed and for a well matched system the pre amp (if active), with or without gain is usually operating as an attenuator (and buffer as well as current drive) and not providing voltage gain. That's all.

Of course an active line stage (pre amp) has benefits other than gain but a line stage can also be active but yet offer no gain and function as an attenuator with all the benefits of a pre amp with "x" amount of gain.

If the source has more voltage out than the amp requires for full output the line stage (pre amp) will always be acting as an attenuator.

BTW.....what would be wrong with hooking a "Big Mac" to KHorns? :) My La Scalas (I had 2 pair, stacked, top one inverted) loved my Pass X150 as did my 4" single driver Horns. It's not like you have to use all the power.

And that leads us back to the precision of the volume control, It's not the the number of "hours" of the control that matters or the gain of the pre amp but rather the precision of the actual control within that rotation from off to full on or as loud as tolerable.

It's all good, maybe I misunderstood you....I just could not see how 8db of gain from a pre amp would be needed in your example when the source would have enough output to drive the amp to full output if directly connected or through a line stage, active with or without gain or even a purely passive such as a TVC.
