...Concerning their volume controls. Like John E says, vol controls are attenuators. In sound engineering lingo, attenuators simply "pad down" or "load down" gain stages. This is a significant concept.
Some preamps will sound best "wide open" as will some amps. It is likely that your amp will sound best with the volume controls turned way up, with a given input signal level. The amp may even sound best with the vol all the way up all of the time. Maybe, it will sound best 3/4 up. Maybe, 1/2 up. The preamp has a similar "maybe" scenario.
Typically, we can avoid the inherent noise floor by allowing a hot input signal, "padded down" only as needed. Also, typically, all considered, less padding(less gain controlled) tends to sound the best. Usually and typically, the preamp (control unit/like the mixing board in a sound studio)is where the levels "want" to be set.
Try the various volume control combos, within reason to avoid speaker blowing, so you can be sure where your gain stages "like" to be set...
