It seemed to me, Mike, that the horizontal bars of the ribbon cage (which Magnepan place at the front, to protect the ribbon) must be negatively affecting the sound.
So it is better to reverse them; it seemed to me, this is not something Magnepan would be likely to do ... as it opens up the ribbons to more easily being damaged.
