I found the main issue with the dead panel, as noted in my reply to kentaja below. It may be a good or bad thing. The panels themselves actually appear to be in decent shape. They are clean and clear, with no real pitting or signs of arcing.
I vacuumed both sides with a shop vac (another "crazy" practice that I've learned to be beneficial), so they should be dust free. I realize that there's probably still some residue and/ or grit embedded in the film.
I may still do the spray cleaning, regardless. Thanks for the tip. It does seem a bit crazy, but I can definitely appreciate the need and possible improvement it could bring. These speakers are quite a bit older than I originally thought they were. They were manufactured in 1990. A lot of gunk can build up on anything over the course of 27 years.
