RE: Big difference between heat gun and hair dryer.

"As one who has used a hair dryer on both Acoustat's and Magnepan's I feel your panic is unwarranted.

In much the same way a whole generation of homeowners used a hair dryer to tension window shrink film kits. Or even another generation of college students used one to tension Saran Wrap over a toilet bowl! Using a light heat to tension flexible films is tried and true.

I don't think I've ever seen any kind of film "lose" tension with a light touch."

Well as I do repair these speaker and Quads and more and also construct my own, I can tell You in my professional opinion that construction of these type of speakers will not give You a satisfactory result in using homeowners saran wrap. hehe
And again, heat shrinking will only get You so far regarding tension.

You all should know that heat treating a mylar film will get You 1! specific tension.
Apply heat to a loose sheet and You'll get that tension.
Apply heat to a pretensioned sheet and You'll have it loose tension to that specific heated tension again!!!!

You will never get around this fact!

And if You never have constructed a functional planar or rebuilt a maggie from scratch, You should listen to me instead of trying to blow me off.
I know for a fact and You don't.

As a side note, shrinking a plastic film over a toilet bowl is a lot different than constructing a loudspeaker.

Have a nice day!

The one who succeeded was the one who didn't know it was impossible.
