In a rather leaky room of about 65.5 cubic metre (sliding doors). The longest dimension is 8.8 metres, giving us an ELF room-gain start point of 19Hz! I don't think I want to get down that low.
It's L-shaped but the total volume still has to raise the power needed. And I do listen in the near field.
Minimum power per channel?
I have a reasonably nice sounding (zero loop-NFB) AKAI integrated SS amp of 55WPC, which would be blue-printed (better caps, R's and chips), offset etc. and perhaps biassed to run it a teeny bit into Class-A - this for Summer listening! Good enough?
Valves?
i) I own two rebuilt LEAK St20s both are capable of 20Wpc 20-20k in pentode more and 16W 20-20K in UL. I'm almost persuaded that one won't be enough, unless I'm using HP&LP with subs @ ~ 100-120Hz and maybe not even then. Bridging them outs the transformer matching way off, so that's out.
ii) ideally 30 to 100 wpc in PP (or PPP), using a CCS on and LTP splitter-driver, plus AC and DC balance pots. Maybe a CCS'd output stage as well. Preferably power triodes or triode wired and with minimal or zero overall/loop NFB. Local NFB will be fine. Your suggestions and thoughts!?
One thing I am quite struck by running a 606 into them is that on large orchestras, even in the near-field, they really don't like being played loud although they do bass growl 100 to 300hz quite well. just not LOUD. The 44s tilt and bass controls - usually at the first position, need to be turned off or the overall level reduced, or both!
Maybe it's partly how they're raised up, can they wobble and could that cause buzzing? Time to find the old stethoscope, eh?!
Is anyone using Hawthorne Audio's Augies as OB bass under QUADs?
The QUAD pre-amps? Which of the later ones have remote volume control at least - and tilt controls even if they are manual? Do those ones still use modules that can be moved? And, does anyone do upgrades on those and their the PSUs. Why? This might just turn out to be cheaper than a bespoke valve pre-amp with RVC and MC phono.
