If you can follow instructions, and work a soldering iron, check out the Bottlehead Foreplay. You could build the "regular" version at first, then do their upgrade kit when you can afford it.
Plus you will be able to service it yourself.
BTW, I’m a cheapskate audiophile too, right now running a used Channel Island passive preamp to my MMGs, that I bought for $125 bucks!
I built the Bottlehead SEX amp, for another system, worked right out of the gate. Doc, PJ, and the rest over there will bend over backwards to help you out with any problems.
