Free standing is actually one of the best configurations for maggies.

I used to have IIb's---the high frequencies are indeed rolled off compared to more modern speakers. I ran mine with a mild HF boost with a tone control, tuned by ear. Lows are a little bit 'romantic' instead of tight, but midrange was superb.

(My 1.6QR's OTOH are too bright stock, and I run with a resistor and choke in series)
