If you find you need the phantom center for movies, you could just use it when you're watching them, and turn it off for audio. Or as others have suggested replace your Advent, ideally with a Maggie center that will match the quality of your III's.
The dipole effect could have something to do with the impairment you're hearing, it's hard to say without knowing something about the receiver's calibration procedure. If a dipole is measured up close, the alignment will be horribly off because they have a huge bass boost. Also, line sources have a different radiation pattern than omnis and so they interact differently with the room. Whatever assumptions the receiver is making, e.g., concerning compromises between on axis and room response, could be significantly off. Not to mention that the frequency response of the Maggies is tailored to work well with large orchestral recordings. A more home theaterish or even flat alignment might not be right for them.
