What you say makes sense:
That is why bracing improves dynamics so well. The net motion of the mylar is greater if the entire speaker is not moving backwards while the mylar is moving forwards. I.e. all the energy is used to move the mylar forwards rather than some of it being siphoned off to move the speaker backwards.
Though here is a post where davey measured it and there is no net movement of the system which I think makes sense if I remember my physics class.
