I had a similar problem

A large screw had penetrated the box but not the plastic nor the sock.
However, I did have a nasty rattle in the left speaker though. I had to send them back and there was a wire that got loose, AND a ribbon tweeter was burst. According to Magnepan, the box puncture most likely didn't cause either problem. They said the damage was consistent more with being dropped. They did indicate to me that IF there were mylar damage they would need to replace it on BOTH speakers to stay matched. The freight company did pick up the whole tab in my case, but that might be because I was receiving them after buying them used from a dealer who handled all the arrangements.

However, if they sound fine for the first few days, I doubt a problem will "develop".

I can see why you would want this resolved with your shipping company being responsible for the damage as well. Remember to have them (the shipper) pick up the tab for shipping them BOTH ways if you decide to send them to Minnesota!
