I unpacked my factory-fresh Quad S-1 speakers today & discovered a pair of white gloves in the box. Very nice touch. I used them in positioning, but they made the procedure a bit slippery. The boxes are wood veneered.

Is this common for higher-end speakers? They retail for around $1000.

It's not uncommon with electronics, those with tubes and/or a high gloss/reflective finish.

That's what I thought. I'm easily impressed. ;}

How much does it cost to include a pair of white gloves in a product box? Hardly anything. But it adds to the buyer's feeling that they're getting something special, and that the manufacturer "cares". That can be worth a lot. Even if the speakers are only $1,000/pair.

I did appreciate it, and I used them to protect the fine finish of the boxes. Top-notch job all around.

This reminders me when I ordered a pair silver ICs, they came with white gloves. Unfortunately the ICs sounded crappy and I had to return them.

Speaking of interconnects: Enough of my components now have XLR sockets, so I'm debating whether I should switch over.

I won't tell you how little I paid for the shitty RCA cables I'm using right now. Will probably order something from Blue Jeans Cables soon. Nothing requiring white gloves.

Blue Jeans is crappy.

Try something from Mogami.

You can also DIY using CAT5 cable as long as it has solid core and Teflon insulation.

I always liked that line.

Once Blue Jeans told me no IC is directional. Their ICs are not transparent enough.

Thank you! It's a terrific album. A little political, but fine throughout. I've loved those lines for years. I should fish out the LP tomorrow & spin it. The Quads go down to 55Hz (allegedly), so we'll see how they do on the last minute or two of O Superman. There's some deep bass there.

My Audio Engine desktop monitors came packaged in microfiber bags. Audio Engine did have great packaging from a protecting the product standpoint, but there is quite a bit of unnecessary non-recyclable waste.

No white gloves though.

Enjoy the new speakers.

"Once Blue Jeans told me no IC is directional".

Doesn't current flow in both directions?

Each Quad came in a thin cloth bag, identical in appearance & purpose to those my wife's high-end purses come in. I use the Quad bags to keep dust off of them. Looks goofy but they serve an important purpose. The speakers were a very significant investment for me.

I also saved the shipping inserts & box since we're moving next May. I will personally move them to the new apartment.

. . . like Chivas Regal? I remember that from a long-ago review, but not the speakers in question.

I think it was Seagram's Crown Royal that came in the purple bag., posted on July 2, 2024 at 19:16:33

Many, many, many years ago I was working very, very late in my office at a large hospital in Chicago. Stepping out into the empty hallway for a break about 1 am, I found a Crown Royal bag on the floor that was filled with maybe twenty baggies of marijuana, ready for immediate distribution. So, I got in the elevator and took it down to the security desk by the main entrance and turned it in. The cops at the desk looked at me like I was some kind of idiot, and one of them said with with a wry smile "Sure thing Doc, we'll take care of it right away. And maybe we'll search the building, too." I should have kept it.

Over 10 years ago my son bought some Quad 12L bookshelf speakers. They came beautifully packed and with white gloves as well. Though not an electrostat they certainly sounded like they came from the same family tree of my Quad ESL-63'S.

Enjoy your new speakers.

I was told that hardly anyone drank Seagram's Crown Royal as their regular drink, because it was very poor value for money.

I was told that liquor stores nonetheless had to stock it, because for birthdays and holidays such as Christmas, especially people who did not drink much would buy it to give to their friends or family, on the faulty premise that the blue velvet bag meant that it was great stuff.

Ignorant Americans (I am tempted to say, "But I repeat myself") think that the "Blended" in Blended Canadian Whisky means that varies sources or vintages of whiskies have been blended to get a particular taste. Not quite.

Canadian law allows whisky makers to blend whisky that has been aged in wood three years, with: Water (OK), Vodka (Questionable), Flavorings (WTF) and Food Coloring (WTF), all in the interest of a "consistent product."

The Bronfman family had enough clout to get that established, and to get the US regulators to allow it.

Now, in fairness to the Canadian regulators, there is a proviso that the end result has to taste basically the same way that Canadian Rye-Containing Whisky Blends have historically tasted. So, you can't add a lot of Mint or Orange flavoring and still call it "Canadian" whisky.

Of course, retailers don't educate their customers about such things, lest word get back to the local distributor...

amb,

john

They only allow straight current to flow through.

None of that bi-current.

My Martin Logan 13A's are very large speakers. They came with sturdy covers that fit them perfectly. When I leave town, I use them. Nice touch.

Diapason Micra speakers came in cute bags, but they were not purple. nt, posted on July 3, 2024 at 12:04:12

Many of my friends preferred to gift Royal Salute for its name and looks rather than taste. They had seen thru the purple bag.

Do you have a scientific justification for claiming that an interconnect is directional? I can't think of one.

I have some decent speaker cables from Blue Jean.
