pack up the record collection for our final move away from Alaska. This is a curse now at 77 years old.
Those boxes are one quarter of the collection, and I am still giving boxes away to a local record store, the Salvation Army, and to an auction house.
Hi Alaskahiatt, I'm 3.5 hours out of Anchorage. What kinds of records did you get rid of ?( generally, of course you couldn't begin to list all of them individually ) What kind of shape were they in and what Salvation Army store did they land at ? Thanks, Will
Most of the records I brought to Salvation Army(only one store now) were classical, 1950s, or others in just fair shape. I had way too much classical.
The records I gave to the record store were all rock and in excellent shape.
Sorry I was not terrific help.
That's a ton of records.
I had over 4,000 at one time and am under 500 now, which is much more manageable.
I'm always surprised at how many I've gotten rid of because I had no desire to listen to them for decades, and now I want to hear them !

I feel sorry for you. Don't hurt your back! I have moved as many as a thousand and did not enjoy it.
However, 50/box times 33 boxes times 4 equals 6600 records! You have got some work ahead of you.
and unloading at both locations. Two back surgeries for other reasons limit my maximum lifting weight. Eight years ago, I helped move a record store with the same size boxes but no more. This is the curse of living in the same place for 51 years and never letting things go.
Those boxes are more full than I like to move. I am also currently moving my lifetime collection, but, thankfully, it is within the same city. After moving two boxes of easy listening without looking, I said WTF was I thinking! I think I had better do like you and cull some out before I move them!

We finally decided to just get out of town and worry about culling more once we get to the new place. We did get rid of stuff we definitely knew we didn't want anymore.
I put a boxed set at either end of the box to prevent warps for the records placed in between. We are paying young people to move all of our boxes into a moving van. My two back surgeries prevent me from doing heavy lifting anymore.

shows up in thrifts or garage sales in Alaska. In fact, hardly anything shows up here anymore, and most goes to our excellent local record store. I only go to thrifts or garage sales if I am already running errands in town. The hunt was always fun, but it is lno longer worth any special effort.
My collection is small compared to several others on this asylum, especially cactuscowboy. That list includes others that posted in the past like ASHRA, etc.
...that you do not have any remorse down the road.
I count thirty full boxes, and that is only about a quarter of the collection! Better you than I!

Take comfort in the fact that we'll be dead one of these days and couldn't give a crap what happens to these boxes. How's that for an optimistic outlook?
And rolling over in our grave laughing at the mess we've left for someone else to clean up!

Or they can take the whole thing to an auction house and get at least a dime on the dollar after paying a moving company to haul it the auction house. Estate sales would make a lot more money, but the headache would be overwhelming.
