One issue that comes up is whether the truly expensive fuses have been tested according to UL standards and thus whether they indeed will function as advertised, if and when the time comes. Like will an "0.5A slow-blo" fuse that costs $100 really blow when the current demand exceeds 0.5A on a sustained basis? There's usually poor or no information on that score.
My limited experimentation, very limited, tells me that fuses can make a difference in sound but not always in direct proportion to cost. I cannot imagine why, except as regards resistance to current flow, which could be as much a function of the conductivity at the contact points in a fuse holder as anything else. As to directionality, I refuse to buy that, unless the fuse is not really a simple fuse but contains some other active element that is direction-sensitive. Otherwise, AC is per se changing direction 60 times per minute, in the US.
Because of all this, I use Acme silver cryo-treated ceramic fuses, when it seems the need is critical. They are very reasonable in cost. I also use their cryo-treated fuse holder; it makes no sense to me to stick an expensive fuse in the typical OEM crappy fuse holder.

It sure seems to me to make sense to me to put a much better sounding fuse in a crummy holder since better sound is what it's all about, right? Everyone decides for themselves how much to spend. I see no logic in using the quality of the holder as a limiting criteria for a fuse upgrade. Fuses are a lot easier to change and sometimes come with a money back trial period. How many people are going to change a fuse holder and compare different fuse holders? What fuse holder upgrades are you familiar with and like? EDIT: Changing the fuse holder is something I haven't done and for sure sounds like a great idea, no pun intended. I'll have to pop the hood on the amp I'm using and see what's out there according to your possible suggestion or just try to find a pure copper or silver plated copper clip. EDIT: I see you are using the Acme fuse holders.

Are the Acme fuses independently certified?

They look to be commercial products that have been silver plated at the fuse contact points and then cryo-treated, according to Acme. So, I assume the basic fuseholder that they start with is UL approved. Also, a fuseholder per se does not have to operate in the precise way that is needed for a fuse, that is to fail at the labeled failure point.
I get what you wrote above; if the boutique fuse sounds audibly better than the OEM fuse, why bother with the fuseholder? My response would be that in such a case, you may achieve further benefits by upgrading the fuseholder.
Lew, I never said why bother with the fuse holder. It a great idea, just something lots of people won't do. Please re read what I wrote. I'll be looking for a pure copper or silver plated copper fuse clip or what ever is in the amp. I think it's a clip but I have to look again.
