I mainly wanted to do one more post about the very special sound of K40y9; and I'm genuinely happy about the possibility to parallel a cap that isn't available in higher values (or just plain huge) with a cap that is - and to get the sound of the small cap :)
All I've ever bypassed in my life until now is PSU and local decoupling caps.
One guy one day said "bypassing a coupler blurrs the sound" and I stopped there. ^^
I guess it's one of those non-universal, "gotta try if you wanna know" things - and that there's a certain scale of values to respect.
All that being said, no matter how musical this crossover has become, the erratic high pitched noise is driving me crazy and no matter how much help I get from DIYaudio I just can't go far without schematics. So off to the tech it will go for some oscilloscope probing :-/
Follow Ups:
But as an example, here's a type of post I've seen on the Asylum more than a few times over the years. I'm paraphrasing...
"Hey guys. I've got speaker brand X , and speaker brand Y here, and I'm thinking of getting rid of one pair. Which ones do you think I should keep?"
What advice would you give that poster? I would hope it would be, "Keep the ones you like the best!" That's all I meant by my answer.
Take care of that knee.
"I can't sell my guns back to the government. They couldn't pass a background check."
I always say the best is what your ears like best. My best may be different yours, everyone has different likes, what I like you may not like so let your ears be the judge of what's best for your system.
If a change I'm about to make might cause the circuit to be unstable, potentially causing oscillation, for example, then I want to know about it. Otherwise, if I like the change I've made, if it causes me to enjoy the music more, then I don't care what anyone else thinks.
That's all I was saying to the original poster, "Relax, enjoy your music, and quit worrying about a consensus".
Your "let your ears be the judge" is sage advice indeed.
"I can't sell my guns back to the government. They couldn't pass a background check."
yup, everybody's systems are different and what they like is different. So I agree with you about letting your own ears be the judge and that's all that counts!
Understood, 1973shovel. However, one answer could be, "I've heard brand X speaker and found it to present better response at the frequency extremes, while brand Y speaker presented a more palpable midrange presence". It would be better advice than simply saying choose what you like best, since sometimes folks are not quite sure what they are seeking until certain matters are pointed out for discussion in AA.

...and many of the replies to "which pair of speakers should I keep?" offered their opinions, and why.
If I were the guy asking which speakers to keep, I couldn't imagine admitting to anyone, "The pair I sold were more fun, and I enjoyed music with them more, but some guys on the Internet told me this pair was more accurate, so I kept these."
Duster, I'm not disagreeing with you about offering an inexperienced seeker an education. That point makes perfect sense. But in the end, they're the one who's going to have to live with their choices.
If KanedaK had said he was thinking about buying some expensive V-Caps or Duelunds to use as bypasses, then him asking for opinions would make perfect sense to me. My intent wasn't to be dismissive, but since he had done the bypass, and seemed to like it, why worry about what others think of it?
"I can't sell my guns back to the government. They couldn't pass a background check."
Because I may find the result seductive yet it might be because I create an artificial bump or depression in the frequency response, wich wouldn't satisfy me intellectually and would most likely be detrimental with different types of signal.
It's cool to fine-tune the sound by using caps that give their own subtle (or not so subtle) character; less so if what you hear is the result of an anomaly.
Anyways I was already bored with the K40y9 in there; they seem to make all recordings equally smooth and glowing and slightly sirupy; great with vocal jazz and massed strings, less so with electro and rock. I was missing some bite.
I might try to use Russian 0,018uF teflon caps as bypass instead, there are some cheap on Ebay.
Good to hear you're sorting out what suits you best.
"I can't sell my guns back to the government. They couldn't pass a background check."
If there's one thing we've learned from you, it's that "cheap on Ebay" gets your attention. Just because real teflon caps cost a lot in the rest of the world doesn't mean they can't be cheap on Ebay!
Not sure that such a small cap will have the desired effect. Typically, the range for parallel caps is 1/10 to 1/100, so you're quite a bit below that (1/500), but it's only a guideline so you might as well try. If they're really cheap, buy more than two and try pairs or even triplets in parallel.
For the same reason, the recommendation below (1/1000) doesn't make much sense.
berate is 8 and benign is 9
You might like to try a polypropylene Vishay Roederstein ERO MKP1839 0.01uF 630V as a bypass cap, which should blend seamlessly with the polyester Vishay/Roederstein MKT1813 cap you mentioned.
This eBay seller is dependable, with quick shipping.

Not to argue, but a question about bypass caps is one of the most debatable topics, with no prevailing wisdom nor consensus, but folks really should chime in and inform the forum about their own insights and experiences. I can't think of many other examples of DIY tweaks that are more up for discussion than bypass caps. It's a perfect example of why Tweakers' Asylum is such a unique and valuable audio forum which is certainly not getting as much attention as it used to.
