Hi Inmates,
I see a lot of class A amp kits on the bay and many claim to be circuits similar to some very well respected designs (nelson pass, musical fidelity, JL etc.)
Anyone have any experience with any of these and how they sound?
link is an example. If this sounds anything like my $1000 Musical Fidelity A1-2001 30wpc it is a huge bargain.
I have cases and hardware lying around although I'd need to buy a tranny.
Anyone listening to any of these?
thanks,
ken

The A1000 wasn't the 'best' of the bunch. I'd look for something else, unless you are fixing an old unit.
I've built some of the 10-watt amps sold by JIMS AUDIO on eBay, they are based on a Nelson Pass design (copied from, ripped off from... however you want to see this practice.)
They are pretty good. Needs BIG heatsinks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/10W-SE-MOSFET-Class-power-amplifier-stereo-assembled-/221716135549?hash=item339f4fbe7d But, this is 10 watts. Since it's class A it sounds a bit bigger, but it is NOT a "powerhouse."
I also built this "Zen class A 5 watt headphone amplifier" - and it's also pretty good. Drives my hard-to-drive HiFiMan HE-6's well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PASS-ZEN-high-end-Class-A-Headphone-amp-5W-Power-amp-kit-DIY-KIT-/111512870822?hash=item19f6af5fa6:g:NYkAAOSwy4hUTy6x
I have not tried any of the JLH- style class A amps.
Built the Elekit, good quality and fun.
