Usually it is something simple but it can make you cuckoo finding it.
Class A's do run very warm. They sound great but I have a hard time with the warmth factor.
Those heat sinks are certainly big enough though.

Par-Metal makes nice chassis...
Tapping the holes for the PCB standoffs/output devices was an experience (tapping fluid? who knew!)...I used a 6/32 drill and M3 tap for them.
This really was fun to build, and a break from the 2 stage SET's
I have piled up and collecting dust... :o)
Getting a front panel plate for it courtesy of Office Depot that says:
"ZEN IV
Penultimate/Class A
Design by Nelson Pass"
Right now I'm simplifyin the wiring around the filter caps...
I've thrown together a couple F-5's by Pass but I may investigate the unit you built.
F-5's are really tempermental and sometimes frustrating to deal with.
Let me know what you mean...I was going to build one next. If you've run into issues let me in on them and how you resolved them..
My ZEN is on crutches right now...(lol)...I turned on my preamp out of sequence (I usually turned on the preamp FIRST and BEFORE I turned on the ZEN)....there was a small "pop" from the speakers, didn't sound like much...but now it just blows fuses. I think I may have hurt the input MOSFET since its not protected...but didn't think that would cause fuses to blow? I'll assume the DIY Grounded GRID tube preamp I was using surged voltage upon turn-on and caused damage..."c'est la vie" I guess...
if the outputs are also mosfets I would check those first.
Had the pop upon blowing an output on the F-5.
As far as tempermental, I found it really hard to get it to stabalize when trying to bias it.
Also when checking after some run in time it drifts a lot.
I know my PS is well built with plenty of capacitance per rail. (42k)
Plus the heat factor.
I felt like it needed more constant attention than I was willing to give.
You may feel differently.
Good sound out of it but feel it was underpowered for my needs.
Did you use the optional 4.7K thermistors that supposedly help compensate for any thermal drift?
absolutely.
I've tried different board versions and while it sounds good, to me it just is like a child that needs a little too much attention.
Just my take on things.
