I don't want to go through the dreaded 1000 hours of break in for for a set of black gate caps. I have been told that they are ways to break in caps out of circuit. Using a small transformer or wall wart and some resistance loading.
Anyone have experience with this?

The circuit you described reminded me of "reforming."

Cool. That's essentially what I built but without the diode. I wonder what the formulae is for cap size as to load resistor? I will be breaking in a pair of 1000uF 16V caps.
