What disadvantages over other recommended kinds?

Most wood AC wall plates I've eyeballed in hardware stores are softwoods that feature thin ferrous steel frameworks that are magnetic by nature and prone to vibrate. If you desire a wood AC wall plate, I suggest you seek an "audiophile approved product" with a stellar reputation.

Wow this site is getting more "sohisticated" all the time. I was just perusing this thread & noticed the banner ad at the bottom was for an outfit called "Wallplate Wharehouse" (I didn't even know such places existed!). Coincidence? I think not.
By whom?
Seriously, wood is fine. It looks good, carries no electrical baggage nor magnetic baggage, and can damp vibrations to some extent. Certainly much better than your standard plastic junk!
The high end uses aluminum and carbon fiber to eliminate magnetic effects, while still sheilding, plus damping mechanically.
You can mimic the high end, sort of, by using cast aluminum outdoor cover plates and putting carbon fiber over that. That's if you want that look.
Some guys swear by wood and you should have no qualms about using it. In fact, one knowledgeable inmate is hinting the the newer myrtlewood plates are very good.
