More experiments:
I compared the following three:
- new cd, green paint marker pen on edge
- new cd, edge sanded with 600 grit sandpaper
- new cd, edge sanded with 600 grit, then painted green
Was able to compare them using both cd-r media and a commercial cd that I bought duplicate copies of.
Surprise winner: sanded edge WITH NO MARKER. Clear winner. The improvement was greater clarity and definition in the highs, leading to a sense of greater beauty in the instruments. No edginess, although a cd that is already bright might end up too bright.
Sanding with coarser 200 qrit sandpaper seemed to make everything worse.
Now, to be exact, in these experiments I sanded with 200 first and then 600. That's because the I did the first cd that way and I wanted to be consistent.
Follow Ups:
I received the Auric Illumniator today.
First test was gel only, on a commercial CD. I had previously sanded the edges of this cd with 600 grit sandpaper. For this test I used the gel only, not the black marker. The particular cd is an old one, purchased used, with pre-existing fine scratches all over it.
Nice improvement. Transients were softened in a flattering way without taking away from crisp playing. Legatos were creamier. There seemed to be a fuller, more beautiful midrange.
I tried the full Auric Illuminator (that is, gel AND pen) on a few CD-R and then on a real CD. I like it! I think it gives truly natural and musical improvements with no down side that I have discovered yet.
I'm a bit tired out from all these experiments so I may just settle on Auric Illuminator.
Note: it's reversible because the gel washes off, and *supposedly* the marker can come off with isopropyl alcohol.
I still use the green Sharpie (with Rain-Ex to clean up my slips) and Brillianize plastic cleaner to clean up the Rain-Ex and the rest. Thanks to previous posters.
