For interior use I would recommend a Gel Cell or other variant of lead acid battery (less chance of a spill or escape of hydrogen). These are commonly used as backup batteries in small UPS devices. They cost a little more than a car battery but they are maintenance free.

No, you'll have more hassle than its worth. Even NiMh has too high a self discharge rate. Use a gel battery with bypass. Try a used 48 Ah used car battery first (no maintenance type) and see how long it lasts. Be careful about ventilation.
