...brass balls and the gullibility of people when they think a phone call will improve the sound of their stereo system. At least with the jar of rocks and the Timex digital clock plastered with a magic orange dot, you can have something physical to hold in your hand. But the effectiveness of the "reach out and touch someone" magical telephone service call is simply beyond comprehension. I wonder how many people have fallen for this scam?

Many, many years ago it was believed that the Earth was flat.
One man says the Earth is round, the high and mighty who know too well that the Earth is indeed flat ridicule this man and burn him at the stake just to make themselves feel better about their belief system.
Many, many years ago it was thought that the sun revolved around the Earth.
One man says this ain't true, and that it's actually the Earth that revolves around the sun. They say Blaspheme! How dare you challenge what we know!
Many many years ago the Chinese figured out that each organ in our bodies has and energy path and all these paths together interact and affect our function. Western doctors say this is hocus pocus because they're not taught to think this way.
Today, one man says a teleportation tweak can help you enjoy your system more, and everyone says that this ain't gonna work. How can you know without trying it for yourself? Perhaps the manufacturer/distributor can offer a risk free option, whereby if one is not satisfied they can have their funds returned?
I have not tried the tweak myself. I probably will once I've setup my system in a proper room. I have spent $60 on various things before - sports tickets, lotteries, donations, beer, socks. Most of us can spend this money without worry, and I'm sure most of us have spent more on equipment and tweaks and and various accessories have not made a lick of difference in the performance our our systems.
Indeed we have, and probably will continue to do so for as long as people refuse to learn the lessons of history. There have always been unscrupulous villains to take advantage of the uneducated, "leaders" (or psychopathic despots) seeking power or monetary gain by preying on the gullible, and prepared to take extreme measures to defend their positions of strength.
At one time, as you say, people were told that the Earth was flat and that the other heavenly bodies revolved around it. To contradict this view was to commit "heresy", often with dire consequences for the heretics. Those, however, were unenlightened times. Nowadays there is no excuse for such bigoted ignorance. The populace does not fall quite so easily for the slick deceptions served up by unprincipled charlatans.
Unfortunately, there are always some people whose weak personality allows them to be drawn in by clever confidence tricksters. Once caught, they become strangely defensive of the position in which they then find themselves, perhaps cofusing open-mindedness with empty-headedness. It's as if they want to be victims!
...I'd prefer not to be saying this after availing myself of said tweak. "I'm sure most of us have spent more on equipment and tweaks and and various accessories have not made a lick of difference in the performance our our systems." It's important to minimize use of this phrase.
Why minimize the use? I'm not trying to get into a slanging match with you Mr. Hertz. Chances are, from reading your posts, that we share similar open-mindedness. But if I buy a power conditioner and I don't notice a difference, even after trying to hear one, then am I not able to say it didn't make a difference in my system?
I remember trying BDR cones under my first sub. They were great under the sub in the demo room, but useless in my living room. It didn't work for me.
Put in several CBFs into various places and I hear a difference. Put teflon everywhere, I hear a difference.

There are always people who can be bamboozled because they want to be led by someone who they think knows more. They are innocent victims of their own gullibility and there will always be unprincipled predators ready to take advantage of them. Innocent people often fail to comprehend how thoroughly evil bad people can be and how dangerous it is to trust them.
Years ago when Linn was publishing their propaganda almost on a weekly basis. I read in one of their papers that if you had a telephone in your listening room it would degrade the sound of your system. They said the speaker in the phone would resonate at a certain frequency and degrade the sound. I guess we have learned a lot over the years, that a phone will actually increase the performance of your system....LOL
I have heard the difference in my two channel system. Try it!
There's less periodic ringing in my ears.
