not sure who gets props for this tweak (al? alan?),but they deserve credit.
i have 3 dedicated lines, with 2 going to mono amps and the 3rd feeding an Acoustic Revive RTP4 conditioner (which feeds the line level gear). all the wall outlets are oyaide R1s
in addition, i've modified my EMM CDSA to remove the POS multi-function rear IEC / AC switch / fuse holder / condiitoner, replacing it with a furutech IEC, dual bybees, and cryod fuse holders. an Audio Magic Pulse Gen DX goes across the +/- of the CDSA, and i'm also using an Acoustic Revive Ground Conditioner on the CDSA.
point of the previous being: i take AC seriously.
now to the 193: the 193M was constructed with an attached AC cord as detailed here:
http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tweaks/messages/144032.html
(leaving it plugged in 24/d, it does not even get warm to the touch)
i plugged it into the R1 feeding the RTP4 (ie all line level gear). it took about 5 hrs to perform its changes. it results in clear, audible improvements in re: to midrange clarity, listening ease and space.
good AC gear reduces glare. the 193M does so in a very similar manner to the Pulse Gen DX (but evidently they are accretive, per my experiences). top end extension is not reduced, its more resolved and less forward in the mix (giving the sensation that the mids & bass are 'pulled fwd' in the mix). its a very relaxing presentation that invites long term listening, whereas digital + SS amps at their worst invite short listening sessions.
midrange resolution (esp in vocals) is quite a treat for such a simple / cheap tweak. low level info (drum stick clacks, vocal sibilance as notes trail off) is more obvious, and tonal depth & harmmonic decay is improved.
final point of obvious benefit is space: ie the recorded space b/w musicians in the mix. its a function of a blacker background (which, given all my AC tweaks, i thought i couldnt get much further improvement). as the noise between performers goes down, the space between them becomes more notable, helping to define 3-d imaging if your system allows (3d imaging is a function of having both width & depth, along w/ a low noise floor so that performers can be heard as separate entities on the same stage, rahter than as 1 continuous stage without the 3d effect).
so, yes, a very good tweak. in re: my fave tweaks, i'd put this one mid-list:
1) room treatments / tube traps
2) dedicated AC
3) good AC outlets (oyaide R1)
4) vibration control
5) pulse gen DX
6) hammond tweak
7) bybees
8) cabling (huge impact, but b/c of $$ involved, its low on the list, as i dont like spending $)
for the $, a bargain, and worth the trouble.
Follow Ups:
I see both of these chokes have been used.
Is there any reason to use the larger M?
I have a few 193Q's laying about unused. Any reason to not use these? How tuned is this circuit? The Q!'s are slightly less resistive than the L and a bit more than that than the M's, will this matter much?
(193L - 57 ohms/193M - 63 ohms/193Q 53 ohms, L is 5 H and M & Q are 10H, put that in for those who are in about the same position as myself on this subject)
Also, I have used these things for various projects over the years and have no idea which was the longer lead. I guess one can try both and see which one sounds best or is it really that important?
Any help would be appreciated.
THANKS,
Rick McInnis
I've tried several outlets and use Oyaide R-1's and SWO-XXX. I however feel the Oyaide WPC-Z heavy aluminum outlet cover which costs more than the outlets is more important that which outlet you upgrade too. I was stunned at the difference this cover made, more improvement than their outlets.

Question "Authority", the mainstream media sucks - Go Independent and hold BOTH parties accountable instead of just the other guys!
I need music to help forget the reality of today
I just find it a simple and elegant solution to the problem of absorbing RF noise present on the AC power system.
"top end extension is not reduced, its more resolved and less forward in the mix (giving the sensation that the mids & bass are 'pulled fwd' in the mix). its a very relaxing presentation"
Your description here is similar to how I hear a good isolation transformer (without "filter circuits") on the AC...
but apparently not as much as a properly-sized choke.
The parasitic capacitance and high frequency AC resistance of the windings are what absorbs the noise. If the AC resistance is small, as in a beefy isolation transformer, then it will not dissipate the noise energy and simply reflect it back into the power line or let it pass through to the load. Similarly, if the AC resistance is too high, the device will also not absorb enough energy. There is an impedance-matching effect here.
there is a different sound. The Hammond mod will also add better dynamics, whereas an Isolation transformer, unless extremely large for the comppoenet draw, tends to slightly squash dynamics. Of course YMMVStu

Yes and no...I have been able to throw a 193L on both sides of a isolation transformer and improve dynamics.

but using the RGPC devices. I have many isolation transformers, most of which are rated for 8.3 amps or so, but I have a few in the 500 watt range. Still I rarely use my isolating transformers for much audio use, limiting them to front end components. I even run a couple in series for my Plasma. All usages have benefited from the chokes added, however, as your messages seem to imply.
I started experimenting with isolation transformers quite early, way back in 1979. I had several smaller transformers and curiously it had the most profound effect on my TT at the time, a non Valhalla Linn LP-12. At only 500 watts (I still have it) It was marginal for anything else. Eventually I scored a pallet of 1000 Watters and thus could experiment with running them in series and in parallel, and then learned by experience that you need a lot of juice for the amplifiers, but I digress.
Glad to see you recovering from the flu, and welcome back.

When I used it plugged into the second duplex (the first being used for an APC S15 UPS/PLC feeding a Sony Bravia LCD and DVD), the video improvement was quite noticable with more uniform color saturation and better image delineation.
I'm now using it in my audio system with similar results as you noted, but have to comment that the improvement on video were greater than that on my audio system.
Cogito Ergo Credo
Audio does better with a 193L.
Alan
Glad you liked it....enjoy!
