Thanks Chris, the reversing of ICs is something that just crossed my mind. I'll try it later since right now the new sound is still impressing me a lot.You know, I've taken this design to the third stage and at each stage I wasn't expecting the difference, especially in the last one. As you may remember, I've got 30awg gold wire spiralled around cotton. In the first incarnation the gold was sheathed in silk and soldered to Furutech FP-126 connectors. The solder was poor since I got some old dude to do it who was just stubborn as hell and refused to use the silver solder I had asked him to use.
For the second version I swapped the connectors for FP-106Rs - quite an outlay for me but I can't solder and believe the cold weld is a preferred option. At least the difference was quite pronounced.
This time I got rid of the silk and fed the gold through thicker cotton tubing and spiralled it around a larger cotton core. It could be because silk is a poorer dialectric (which I see has a constant of 2.5-3.5, though the tubing was very porous) or, rather, the distance of >1/2" between the conductors, but the new ICs have brought out a tonality, richness and, best of all, a weightiness to the music that I really wasn't expecting. They haven't even broken in yet - could the sound possibly 'degrade'?
My question of spacing is more about the conductors as they narrow towards the connectors. The hardest part of the construction process was getting the locking part of the connectors back on the body. The cotton core is wider than the connector so I had to cut it up, make it thinner towards the ends and tape it up with polyethylene tape for rigidity. All the while I was making sure the conductor line was as smooth as possible (it took hours). The end result looks pretty, er, cybernetic, and cool:)

Where did you get your Gold wire?.
I remember reading a post at AudioGon where Jadem found a non-spiral, but straight, length to yield better sound. He also concluded 3/4" spacing between the leads to be best (for him).
My uncle is a gold merchant. He was kind enough to give me several feet of 0.25mm (30awg) 4N wire for free to experiment with. Don't think it would cost all that much anyway since there is so little of it in weight.
All that work by Jadem was the inspiration behind my experimentation with gold and with going for a more highly spaced version. I realized as I was constructing this alst one that it's harder to create a parallel wire. Spiralling helps keep the wire in place, it makes the cable more flexible (in the sense that the wire won't get kinked) and it adds some degree of RF rejection. Other posts on here also made me think twice about going parallel and unshielded.
The result is far more than I hoped for. The highs have been tamed and smoothed out considerably. I'm on the verge of thinking that they've even gone too much in the opposite direction to what they were before. But no, I won't go that far - they're actually much nicer. Now I can really crank up the volume and not feel any fatigue. Extra bass has also come from somewhere, god knows where. All in all the sound is that much more ethereal.

If you have an gas-tight crimp with the screws, you should be fine.
