I'm thinking about trying the Obbligato caps (Copper or Gold Premium) as coupling caps in my solid state DAC. Any opinions? Comparisons with other premium caps? Currently auditioning Mundorf Silver/Oils, thus far, with around 200 hours burn in, mids are slightly thin, harmonics bleached out a bit. Looking for more warmth, harmonic richness.
Follow Ups:
In the output stage of my DAC, I initially tried the Mundorf SIO and did not like them. They sounded exactly as you have described and I also found them to be more tilted towards the top end. They were well broken in. After trying many more brands (loss of $$$) I finally settled on the Cardas golden ratio caps. They are silky smooth with a lot of body and richness with no loss in resolution and fantastic bass impact.
I find the Mundorf SIO to be overrated and not to my liking.
Very interesting, I agree they are tilted towards the top end, one more try this weekend after over 300 hours burn in. I also agree with you about the Cardas caps, these are in my Art Audio Carissa Signature SET amp. Some say these caps are closed in on top, I find they simply give voice to everything else in the system. You could never say my top end is closed in with these Mundorfs in the DAC!
I should have thought about the Cardas caps, these will now be my first choice after trying out some Auricaps I already have on hand, thanks.
I have Obbligato copper as coupling caps in my pre-amp and for attenuation in my crossovers. The sound is full and big, whatever that means, but not especially warm. I wonder if the Jupiter beeswax cap might be more what you're looking for?
I had forgotten about the Jupiters, defintitely a contender. I have some Auricaps on hand as well, they have a nice warm midrange. I'm sure they will suffer in comparison to the Mundorfs in freq. extremes, resolution and transparency. Anyway, I'm going to give the Mundorfs up to 400 hours burn in, hopefully they will fill out more in the mids.
Guys, I changed from Solens in my Khorn crossover to copper obbligatos which removed grain very nicely, but they were a little sharp to me. Changing to Obbligato oils gave detail, clarity and grain free listening. No edge. Very nice--especially considering the price.
