I truly think the design has a lot of merits.
I used an el-cheapo carbon pot because I did NOT want to put a lot of money into a passive preamp design that I knew nothing about!?
When you experiment....that's what you do.
Other proponents of the design use MUCH better Alps or Noble pots and Dale/Vishay, Craddock, Corning or Holco 1% (or better) MF resistors.
The ability to mix and match components relatively cheaply to "tailor" this preamp to your source and amp....tweaked my interest.
Can this passive preamp sound better than stepped attenuators?
Probably not...but it sure was FUN trying!!

BTW, please understand I applaud you for building this- what I'm knocking is the rational behind shunt VCs and their promotion, not your wisdom in trying it. Somebodies got to be the odd man out and point out why it's a flawed concept, regardless of current fashion. Just using a pot as a pot one at least gets the ratiometric advantage of having the same material in the upper and lower legs. To some degree, any flaws the pot element may have will tend to cancel out. Now, once you've got the preamp built and see how good it can be, it's a much smaller jump to upgrade the attenuator.
does anyone have the passive preamp circuit mentioned above? Also, I would appreciate any recommendations on component values & manufacturer. I'm looking to build a passive preamp but don't want to go crazy on costs (less than $30 would be nice).
TIA from a new inmate.

thanks for the post CBT. This is exactly what I was looking for. Some interesting "homebuilt" cables too.
