Had to put my Pioneer Stable Platter CD player backup into service. It took me awhile to think about where to put Code Name Turquoise from Machina Dynamica. The only real estate available is the 4 corners of the drawer, which slope creating large surface areas. As a simple and reversible test I cut small triangles for the flat surfaces in each corner. The most obvious improvement was the high frequencies which immediately went from typical hard edged digital to a more analog-like presentation. DAMN! This analog-like sound also effected the entire frequency range. The resultant sound is much more relaxed.
This morning I fashioned templates to cover both the flat and sloped areas in each corner- probably 10 times the Turquoise as my first test. I replayed the same cuts and they sounded better still. Background sounds previously obscured are readily apparent.People replace DACS, cables, power cords, tubes and components in hopes of achieving what this simple, inexpensive, and reversible tweak did here!

I wanna try one myself. I keep lowball bidding on A'gon for one and I get outbid. My Trivista has a silver bottom tray like in his photo. Thanks for your comments.

the effect with a sheet of green colored paper and a hit of regular rubber cement. On the Trivista, the laser utilizes a true red light laser and a sheet of red paper will probably work better.
been there, done that...
Stu
that you're nicely behind the power curve...:-)Merry Xmas
I had the cheapest product to make the Recommended components list. In fact I used to give it (CVD Greenback) away free if you bought a CD player from me and had to raise the price so that dealers could make some profit. Doug Blackburn thought it would cost him $20 per disc, but at the time, I was selling it for a dollar. Jack English did the review, BTW. That led to a discussion with him about CD player mods, much of which he wrote about in the early Positive Feedback, especially after he auditioned a modded player I sent him.
Maybe I should have raised the price: I notice a German version selling for $30. Audio Prism sent someone out to purchase about 20 pieces from me to research the phenomena. There was nothing really special about it, except for the die cut discs.Been there, done that.

UncleStu-
If this is Stuart Ono, it's been at least ten years or so since we last talked at length, but I sure hope life is treating you well, as you were one of the NICEST dealers I have ever dealt with! Always willling to share, always willing to help. It doesn't get any better than that!
Back to the topic: I have used at least three different CD Greenbacks to cut templates that fit perfectly into the disc tray of the players I have used over the last 15 years. What a fabulous mod! And cheap! I still have about ten Greenbacks left, believe it or not. (I started with about 20 and gave away a bunch down through the years, BTW. At a buck a 'Back, I could afford to be generous!)
Interestingly, I had an Esoteric X-01 that would have benefitted greatly from such a treatment, but its performance level was not quite as advertised by the reviewers (a little too thin for my taste) so I sold it and took a hit. I never tried the mod because I had a feeling early on that I might not be keeping it and so I didn't want any possibility of anyone saying the unit wasn't absolutely mint when sold. I suspect that the use of a Greenback cut to size and placed in the tray may have helped the unit considerably, and I would recommend it to anyone who owns an X-01 or similar Esoteric player to inquire with Esoteric about using such a mod. However, be informed: Esoteric is NOT receptive to mods on their units (another reason I sold it) and will cancel warranty immediately if they catch you. (This per the head of service, Tim, who is a very nice guy to deal with. Apparently, Alex Peychev is the only guy they allow to mod their unit AND which they will subsequently provide service for if something does eventually fail. Lucky Alex!)
With the X-01's shiny silver tray reflecting all that nice laser scatter everywhere, it certainly could only help the unit's over-all performance level to put in such a simple laser scatter-catcher. Yet, at a $16k list price currently these units should not need these silly little tweaks and fixes, as they should come with such a device installed by the factory, and not by us after-market. But sadly, they don't, so we must. Fortunately, the CD Greenback and its progeny did and do a wonderful job of dealing with such problems. And for that, the audiophile community owes UnceStu a big, fat "Thanks!" ( I know I certainly do!) In short, CD Greenbacks still rock!
Again, hope all is well for you, Stu! And GREAT to see you still there helping us lost-in-the-woods audiophiles with excellent advice. Some things never change, thankfully.
All the best!

I'm betting Codename Turquoise is THIS much better than any of those green thinggies of the previous century...:-)(by the way, I am pretty sure I auditioned your Greenback at Golden Sound a few years back...)
