You have the concept (& thus goal) incorrect. It is NOT merely covering the opening (that will do nothing as the center contact is already surrounded via the outer contact). The proper implementation is to connect center & outer contacts TOGETHER (a short). You can do this via ordinary RCA plugs that you have soldered a shorting wire across both terminals & then insert these shorting plugs into the unused jacks. Shell casings would only work if you installed a center prong (to make contact with the center terminal of the jack); I suppose proper-sized nails could serve when soldered or brazed into the primer opening, but if not precise you risk re-sizing the jacks such that they no-longer mate well with cable plugs.

NO I don't think so I'm pretty sure I don't want to SHORT the inputs on my 1973 Pioneer SA-9100 as a simple mistake of the slector switch could be a very bad thing.
I'm talking about caps NOT shorts
You do want to short your inputs to reduce the noise floor. But even a short wire link could act as an antenni (especally these days with Wifi and bluetooth everywhere) so this also needs to be screened
and given the age of your amp does it have those nasty linking pins in the back if so i would replace them with some short-length interconnects if you haven already done so.
It's the unused preamp outputs that want those covers on them, that way it will screen the outputs and prevent noise radiation from those outputs.

MY amp has the Pre out and Main in RCA's but does the jumping internally via a switch so no need for jumpers.
I fully understand what Shorting and non shorting caps are. INput or not I'm not going to connect the two conductors in my amp anywhere.
BUT and this is what I was interested I would like to cover the RCA's not being used. I was after comments on the results of doing this. Not so much suggestions I do something else.
Covering the outputs will reduce the electical noise radiated from them by very effectivly screening them.
Screening the input the same way will prevent external noise getting in, it however wont do much for the noise floor that is generated within the amps chassis. As others here have already stated.
Your quite safe using shorting pins on the unused inputs.
Chris
Thank you Chris
What good would just covering them do?
Unless the entire rest of the amp enclosure is a Faraday cage covering the jack will do nothing. Because any stray RF (I am guessing this is what you are hoping to block) will just go through the enclosure vents and right into the back of the jack, the board traces, and components.
Grounding an INPUT will not harm your amp.
OK never mind.
