I understand that the Bugle performs best when using SLA batteries
I would stick with the recommended parts list for stuffing the PCB, but buy a large number of the film resistors for the RIAA EQ section so you can get some nice matched pairs. They are inexpensive
Even when you add the cost of two batteries and a trickle charger, the Bugle still punches well above it's weight class

Follow Ups:
The Bugle uses a dual differential input circuit, IIRC. When I first heard Jim's prototype, I told him I thought it sounded better than a Black Cube. I haven't heard the latest incarnation of the BC, but certainly the Bugle is an absolute steal at it's price.

uh, actually, the bugle uses a low noise op amp of your choosing.
most of the better choices use a single differential input pair, maybe cascoded, loaded with a current mirror.
i have a bugle and use my own version of jim's recommended ac supply. i agree that this riaa preamp sounds VERY nice.

I built the Bugle Pro (variable EQ version) about 6 months ago and have been very happy with it. It's great for playing 78s and later RIAA vinyl as well.

I have a Bugle pre that I am not using at the moment, but I would like to use it as a variable eq pre, next to my usual valve pre, for my older records. I would be interested in having details about how to make the variable eq circuit. Do you need to switch over all three resistors, or can you just switch over the two caps?
Regards
Anthony
