I saw an ad for a book, I think it is written by Allen Wright and I think it is called " the cable cook book " and I believe it goes into high end cable theory and has some " how to " tips on building your own cables......just curious, have any of you folks read it and if so, do you think it is a good book?
Follow Ups:
I'll put these up against any megabuck cable you care to mention -
This basic DIY cable construction is not that advanced. Just a decent coax with run-of-the-mill materials, and a fairly expensive crimping system.
While the cables this kind of construction can make are OK, they are NOT giant killers or high performance.
Yes, they will probably beat most OEM freebie IC's, and even most entry level after market IC's. But once you get into the midline of aftermarket cables, they are no longer that competitive.
Other DIY designs have been widely considered to be sonically superior, including the Alan Wright Cookbook design's. The only thing about Alan's design's are that the foil used is not readily availble, and is sold by Alan's company.
Other less proprietary DIY alternatives are the various DIY cable recipes as posted on here at the Asylum, such as:

Polypropylene rope IC's:

and

as well as the many posts on power cords (the Asylum Power Cord recipe). speaker cables, and digital IC's. The vast majority of these posts are in the Cable Asylum at:

Most of these do not involve items for sale by the author, or proprietary materials or unobtainable raw materials, but readily available stock cables or wires, etc. Nor do they involve proprietary crimping systems that cost as much or more than the materials to make the cables!

yes ....I have a copy
to be honest its very hard to get the part in the uk ..
also there are only about 3 designs with multiple varients on those themes.
If you want some advice ...don't use a shield on your cables ..go for a twisted pair made from silver, silver/gold, platinum etc...I try and keep away from copper.
It is considered by some folks to be the bible of DIY cables. Yes it is good. You should read over the Cable forum for specific information in DIY cables and I think Allen posts there himself.
