This came up not that long ago, and I went into my stash and looked at my 6BQ5/EL84 specimens to see what pin 8 was connected to.

On some tubes, pin 8 connects to nothing. On other tubes, it connects to the plate, and on others I could tell that it connected to something inside the tube's structure, but I didn't bother to measure to figure it out.
