I believe this is correct, I am looking to use a pair of these 6n3cEs in my Heathkit SP-17A regulated power supply (400 vdc max @ 100 ma), it uses a pair of 6L6GC's so I thought I would ask the experts here first. Also, I have a quad of these I was thinking of using in my Onix SP3, it uses 5881's, I believe I heard that these 6n3cE's would do the trick... thanks!

thanks, guys, BTW, swfarrar, you used these tubes in an SLI-80? I have one but I thought the SLI-80 used KT-88...
I have happily used the 6P3S-E's for years now and I personally like them better than NOS Sylvania 6BG6GA's and as well as NOS TS 6AR6WA's (both used with tube socket adapters) in Niteshade NS-30 PPP amps. But, on a whim I bought some Russian 6L6WGC that look identical to the 6P3S-E to see if they sounded similar. They did not at all .... to bright, thin and forward sounding. So, I returned them and tried some Sovtek 6L6WXT.
The Sovtek 6L6WXT was a revelation. Better defined, deeper bass .... smooth refined mids and a more extended treble in only good ways VS the 6P3S-E. A slight congestion I hear in the upper bass/ lower midrange(guess???) with the 6P3S-E at times is also absent with the 6L6WXT. The 6L6WXT is a beautifully balanced and liquid sounding tube. Plus, the 6L6WXT is a true 6L6GC which is currently less expensive than the few 70-80's NOS 6P3S-E's available now.
Glad that you like the Sovtek 6L6WXT.
In my humble opinion . . . not a chance versus NOS 6P3S-E,
but, thats just me.
Have you ever compared the two??? I have used the 6P3S-E in a custom switchable SET/ UL/ SEP amp and in Niteshade NS-10, Niteshade NS-30 tube rectified and a Niteshade NS-30 SS rectified amps
The 6P3S-E's are definitely hyped on AA and they are an excellent tube no doubt. I found/ tried them by accident long before they were the rage on AA. But, when I put the 6L6WXT in these same amps recently you hear the 6P3S-E has some short comings.
In fact, read through some 6P3S-E archive posts and you will see references to the 6P3S-E tube sounding rolled off and the tube having some congestion to some people. I hear that too at times but I still really like them. However, the 6L6WXT's I have used (build date 3/10) don't have those flaws and I think they are a superior tube top to bottom.
All those choice 70's and 80's 6P3S-E's have virtually disappeared. Check Jim McShane's website .... he is almost out and there aren't anymore. That is why I recommended the 6L6WXT as an alternative. But, from what I hear the 6L6WXT tube is an even better choice.
Of course, I have compared the two before I wrote my statement.
No point in arguing about which of the two sounds best when it's just personal taste that we compare. Anyway, the fact that NOS 6P3S-e's from
70's and 80's are hard to come by today, is also not a valid argument for them to sound worse than 6L6WXT's. . . that you do not claim anyway. :)
I've been very happy with the 6n3cE in two Cary amps, an AES AE-25 and Sli-80. I had some vintage Tung Sol 5881s that I really liked and decided to try the 6n3cE. They worked perfectly and sounded great. They're widely available online from Eastern European dealers but I'd recommend getting from a reputable U.S. dealer who can test and match them. I got mine from Jim McShane and think they're a real bargain.
Mine also came from Jim. Absolutely stable, beautiful sounding tube in a SE parallel set up.
They're pretty close. I like to run mine at 21 watts dissipation. They'll hold up well at that, and sound PDG. Some like to run them higher, but IMO they might not hold up. I've run them in some of my friends modified Dynacos at that dissipation, they've held up for about 5-6 years of pretty regular use before they start to get flakey. Any less and the sonics start to suffer.twystd
