I'm a fan of AZ1/AZ11 mesh, and I use two in parallel for my PSE 4P!L amp. You only need one for a preamp. Mesh is audibly better - to me - than the solid plates. Usually you can find some from Germany and the rest of Europe. I prefer the AZ12 base - the AZ1 base is a bit clingy and can loosen tube bases. The AZ1 P sockets are easier to find than the Y10A sockets which now only seem to come from China.
Other than that I like 80 or 5Y3GT and I like 5R4GY. I prefer directly heated rectifiers but find the 5U4G types and their brethren sound a little flat. The 5R4GY drops a lot of volts and takes a 4uF first cap, but to me it has more life in the sound. In 6.3v the 6BY5G is also nice. But mesh is king.
It gets harder to hear the differences in rectifiers the more you pile on the chokes, and if you use Ale Moglia's gyrator. But I would still choose one of the above for projects having played around with a few options.

Ask Jan First sells the original AZ11 and AZ12 socket, the Y8, in "used cleaned" condition. AJF also sells a Y10 of unknown origin, but with "improved contacts".

The Y10 is also available from AudioR�hrenTechnik. According to the website it's "aus eigener Fertigung". ART actually manufactures a variety of difficult to source European sockets. The website is well worth a visit if you are in trouble.

  I just emailed Jan of AJF and it's exactly as you say - he has originals and Chinese ones which it seems he had made up for him.
  
  I'd like to find a source of original 10 pin sockets (as for EL156) or 8 pin the same style, so if anyone has further information let me know. I looked at AudioRohrenTechnik and while they do own production sockets which are good to know about, I don't see any Y10A. The German for socket is Fassung if you want to search (Suche).

    If you click on "Europafassungen" you'll find the Y10A towards the end of the list.

      Very useful - I missed that.
      
      Have you tried any of their own make sockets? Would you prefer those or NOS ones?

        No, I haven't tried ART:s own sockets so far. I have a healthy supply of OS and NOS sockets of the types I am using now and sockets I'm planning to use in the forseeable future.
