They are much more compact and far less expensive, but beat many super machines in terms of their sound.
Follow Ups:
They look like they're built like tanks. Beautiful-looking machines. Robust. Price tag seems high on eBay, but I'm very new to this. I have no reference point.
I accept that tape is the most expensive format. That's no problem. I can accommodate that. It's the potential for hiss that stops me.

The electronic noise usually does not enter the picture, it is all what's on tape, and good tapes are quiet... by my standards. But like I said, tape is tape and someone might find it excessive. However, it tends to be quieter than the LP's, so if you can listen to LP's then you should be happy with the tape.
Don't worry about the ebay asking prices, most of the time they do not reflect the real situation.

Your last sentence is encouraging. I listen to LPs & enjoy them very much through my stats. The noise level is quite tolerable. I'm only interested in new tapes.

Tapes is the most inconvenient media, but the result can be rewarding.
