Got yesterday superb new tape from International Phonograph Inc."- Joe Policastro Quartet - Jeru. West Cost type jazz without piano. Very easy to listen to jazz with a flavor of New Orleans jazz. I recorded the two horns (trumpet and baritone sax) very up front. This tape is demo quality at least and just has wonderful impact. I'm very happy with it. See pix of session below. This is as good as I've done for a jazz ensemble."
The tape is simply fantastic, and a must for anyone with a 15ips 2-track machine.
It may be currently sold out, but I suspect they can make more.

I just received my copy of Jeru the other day. It's terrific but not sure I agree with Jonathan about the horns being very up front. Maybe compared to Jonathan's other recordings.
His newest effort reminds me very much of a Roy DuNann/Contemporary recording. Great instrumental presence and midrange tone. It's like the musicians are in the room with you. But with better extension at either end of the frequency extreme and much cleaner and transparent.

He was almost apologetic about that, but I found it - at least on my system - seductive without being overdone.

Dear All,
If you are thinking of taking advantage of the current sale of $150.00 for any direct tape I sell, now is the time to speak up. I have started running today and need to know what further copies of what to set up and run for.
I hope you'll order soon, as I invested all of IPI's funds into raw materials (tape, boxes, reels, labels) so I would not run out during this period and with the belief you would all order tape during this time. I wanted to be able to fill any orders that came in.
Please let me know even if you're only getting one tape you're saving money and bringing yourself some pleasure.
Several of you have asked me for desert island recommendations, whether a direct copy or not. I'll do my best to recommend:
1. For sound and musicianship
A. Dee Alexander — stunning sound and musicianship. Doesn't get much better.
B. Mark Colby — just gorgeous music and sound. One of my Canadian customers reminded me of how beautiful this tape is.
C. John Wojciechowski Quartet — as natural sound as I"ve done... but if you prefer an organ in there:
D. George Fludas — Organ Quartet or Greg Ward — Organ Quartet.
E. Jeremy Kahn Duets — My purest recording with only one stereo mic. I'll never beat it as to natural space. Everyone with a tape deck should own this.
2, For Music orientation:
A. Frank Strazzeri— studio style sound and one of the best piano trio outings ever in jazz.
B. Clare Fischer — Love Song or State of His Art. Recorded with a Stellavox SP7 and just intimate with serious piano playing.
C. Warne Marsh at the Icehouse — True unmitigated genius improviser. Dry and intellectual but no one is like Warne Marsh.
3. Audio Demonstration
A. Joe Policastro Jeru — Great presence while still being natural. Very engaging and impactful. Very popular tape.
4. Slightly edgy, not wholly straight ahead jazz, a bit avant.
A. Jason Roebke — stunning musicianship and sound. True Chicago jazz, just a bit quirky.
B. Greg Ward Trio — Same description as A above — stunning musicianship and sound. True Chicago jazz, just a bit quirky.
C. Mike Garson — Superb sound quality but very deep, complex playing. Not for the light listener. But if you wish to expand your jazz ear this might be the ticket. David Bowie's piano player.
D. Lee Konitz — European flavored jazz. Very intellectual jazz with little blues feel to it. Brilliant playing.

Well, almost, so there is still room for a couple more. :)
Jonathan does exceptional job, I like his work better than some other outfits.
