This will be my second. Wife rescued this from a willing uncle. Score! He may have more Tandberg he wants to share. Hoping he has a 20A too.

Big J,
Decades ago I was very interested in cassettes. At one point, because I'd read/heard so much positive about Tandbergs, I bought one, I believe it was a 310. That proved to be a disappointment, both for performance per dollar and reliability reasons. But I expect their more expensive models such as yours must have been very good. Something other than mine established their reputation.

I hope so. The other 440A I have provides satisfyingly solid and dimensional reproduction. Need to try some of the XR60s I got on them now, and push the boat out a bit.

I had a pair of 440A's when new. When they worked, they were excellent, when they did not work (which was most of the time after the first 2 yrs). they were a pain, and made horrible off speed recordings.
Sent them back to Tandberg 2x. Each time for the same repair. The bearings for the capstan would go out. Was a design weakness in the deck.
As I had similar problems with mine, no wonder the owner sold it to me really cheap. I put up with its idiosyncrasies for a while as I wasn't recording much anymore anyway. I finally traded it with another deck to tide me over until I find a better one.
