For Sale Ads |

Ok, what features would you like to see on our For Sale application?
We've taken a craiglist type of approach to keep it fast and simple. Ads can contain html and many do for those that are versed in embedding picture links and whatnot. We also do have feedback and the ability to link feedback to specific ads.
A common request is for easy picture uploading. That's on my list.
What else that is basic, quick and easy to do, does it need?
Thanks!

Later Gator,
Crank up your talking machine, grab a jar of your favorite "kick-back", sit down, relax, and let the good times roll
I have a Sony 651 Reel to Reel laying around for a year that I had bought for $50.00 U.S. does anyone know about this machine or has one?
The speed is not real stable on it. I am told parts may be hard to find.
I have a working Teac 1040S that I use most the time, along with my Newly aquired good used Teac V900x Cassette recorder with DBX.

As the listings get more numerous, it would be nice to be able to search a specific item to see if any are currently listed.
Excuse me if this has already been suggested. I didn't read all of the other suggestions.
Thanks for all you do!
Steve
Specifically:1. Being able to watch items is cool.
(Audiogon has this feature, although not quite as nicely implemented as Ebay to be honest.)2. Being able to locate items via zip code is nice (as Audiogon has done it).
(Or better yet, within a certain "X" mile radius is even better, as Ebay has done it.)3. Being able to have an email alert when certain items pop up would be great, and should be a priority.
(This is a great feature, that would put you one better than Audiogon, as they do not have this feature.)4. Some sort of authentic feedback system would be great.
(I know you supposedly have some sort of feedback now, but I am confused as to how it works. Audiogon's feedback is weak, and Ebay's has gotten weird, as they no longer allow sellers to leave negative feedback for buyers.)5. Setting up a favorite searches would be great.
(Typically, I am looking for one or two items, and since I have to search for those items each time, it would make it simple to just bring up my favorite search and hit a button and have all of them pop up.)6. FYI, I could care less about auctions, so IMHO, having them is pretty much a waste of time.
(I merely want a place to buy and sell.)7. Advertise this site to get more traffic, so that more items sell, and the items sell faster.
(I really think that getting more people to browse the site is the whole key to getting this off the ground. That is why I think you should make the classifieds no longer free. That way you have a built-in advertizing budget. (i.e. spend most of your fee budget on advertizing.)
I realize you are not thrilled with having people pay for ads, because you think it will push people away, but I disagree.
If I am right about how you feel, then how about this, then?
If you are a register inmate (i.e. you've paid the minimum $25/year donation), you get 10 free classified listings, (and the higher donation you make, the more free listings you get), and after the 10th free listing, the following listing fees are only $1 each. If you're not a member, the fee is $2/listing. I think that would be cheap enough to make everyone happy.)Those are my thoughts so far...
Nice to see you putting forth this kind of effort, Rod.
(I am holding off listing my speakers on Audiogon, hoping that the AA classifieds can come through for me.)
Good Luck!PS Thanks for the cool Yo-yo btw!
My little girl is jealous and wants one too.
(Maybe next year is what I am telling her!!)

Auctions are much more complex and mission critical than a classified. Imagine the server or internet connection going down when a dozen auctions are ending. Havoc. I'm just guessing, but I don't think AA has even a hint of the necessary redundant systems necessary for even a half-way serious commercial web site.

I disagree, as well. Get it set up, get the kinks out, enhance it, then when it's gained some momentum, start charging. The implementation challenges of a payment system and the necessary bookkeeping for charging sellers could make the actual classified code look trivial.
Finding zip codes in a certain radius is not trivial. A quick search came up with a PHP app that comes with a db to find the distance from one to another. One could likely hack that code to display the distance from you if your zip was in our db and you were logged in. It'd be so much easier if zip weren't arbitrary and you could just select on a range. Basically, it's a lot of work that would come way down on the list after shipping calculations. The other problem is that the db is always changing and hence out of date.
Feedback has always been there, but we need to make if more obvious and simple to use. Actually, it is simple, just finding the links is hard.
I am considering doing some advertising to get this pumped up, but I actually think that most folks know about it and just continue to do Agon. But we'll give it a try and see if we can push more buyers here and if Agoners would list here and wait it out, the buyer will come.
Hopefully, the new features will make a difference. We surely have seen a big increase in listings and traffic the last couple weeks.

how about a "new today" spot , that way you can just see if anything new is popping up.
We do that, but if you just click on the general For-Sale link, you get a full list sorted by the date and time listed, so the newest are at the top.
-Rod
Needless to say, that takes a toll on the server itself once the number of ads to grows to several thousand, as well as being slow(er) to load on many user machines or over slow connections. It should be easy enough to implement (it's just the 'all' list with a date or time constraint) and it's one of those things that's more or less expected. After you've implemented that, pages for 'New 2 days', 'New 3 days' are knockoffs.
True, it was just a couple lines of code to call a data routine and add a time variable to modify the where sql. It's hour based, so anything is just a link.

Edit/Modify/Update button!
We really need a replacement for the Audiogon ads. Thanks for stepping in.
My suggestion? If the ads are still free, perhaps a large donation icon (to AA) within the ad?
Folks may get the idea that the bandwidth and time/trouble is worthy of some compensation? I would.
Hello!
I have many LP records of old folk music, and wish to transfer to digital format. ¿Anyone can say me which the better way to convert LP to MP3?. ¿What about the “U-record Music Archiver” ?.

I like the "watch" feature on eBay ... not sure how EZ this is to add
Being able to see whats for sale locally would be great!
Hi Rod,
Thanks for soliciting suggestions. I appreciate that!
I want to echo TWB2's suggestions:
- New Price.
- Shipping from what Zip.
- Number of Views
- Photo upload (this is more important than you'd think)
I'd also like to add:
- A shipping calculator (if possible).
Thanks for all your hard work on this.

Philosophically we all are supposed to understand and respect the separation of "buy/sell/trade" from the general content of each forum and I'm all for that. I don't want to have to filter ads out from the flow of discussions. However, and this is a big one, I bet it would help the classifieds, and therefore any and all who ever buy, sell, or trade, if there could be a more direct way to link ads to an individual forum. Suppose for example that at the moment there is a discussion about a particular "vintage" speaker going on and I have a pair available at a fair price and would like to let participants know. I can post a classified but as the system currently is set up and under-utilized no one will necessarily figure that out. There isn't even a vintage category, is there? I haven't necessarily come up with the solution yet but you're asking..... Maybe when an ad is placed the seller could choose one or two forums to link and each forum could then have a sidebar with the last two days targeted ads available. Some of us declare ourselves to be non-commercial purists but unless you're either done and happy with a lifetime system, dead poor, or lucky enough to have just what you need handed over for free just when you want it we all buy, sell, and trade, right?

I'd like to see a feedback system.
There is one already. It's the Rating field in the ad header.

New Price.

An easy photo upload. Thanks! (It worked!)
Posting the picture here (in a thread) works well, but there is no such feature when posting an ad.
When I say "views" I mean the number of AA visitors who have actually looked at my ad.
Good photos are a hook- make them happen throughout the classified site!
Your lack of listings compared to the huge # at Audiogon is a problem that will only be overcome by making the classifieds extremely appealing.
Rod,
Maybe have a look at the CanuckAudioMart website. I've been using it casually for a long time - as have no shortage of other Canuck audiots - and you might see some ideas there that you can adapt for AA usage.
They do have some issues with making pictures larger but I don't always find that a necessary feature.
As for the right here and now - I concur with the picture uploading made easier. I just want to pick my pics off my "audio file" (pun intended) on my computer and upload 'em right quick.
And whatever you do - do it soon - SWMBO is asking for her parking space in the garage to come available before the snows in Edmonton fly fiercely!!
