...as I have been ripping many discs in with AIFF. Since some folks like WAV, thought I would compare. I honestly could not tell a convincing difference.
On the other hand, swapping out the USB cable to the DAC, or the DAC interconnect to the preamp, made an immediate and significant difference.
Happy with AIFF and metadata...

Steve, I am in the process of researching to put together a PC or laptop based and USB DAC (maybe HRT Streamer II+ ?) digital front end for my music only system. Which software sounds best in your experience? I've been thinking using iTunes but some say it does not sound as good as some others. Would very much like to hear from you on this as well as recommendations. Thanks!
I'm very new to computer audio, so please take my comments in this context.
I have just taken delivery of a Musical Fidelity V-Link which has made a noticeable difference in sound qualiy of pc files. Once I had this hooked up I did a brief comparison between wav files recorded thru itunes and thru Windows media player. The Windows media player files sounded clearer and were not lacking in air on top like the itunes files.
I am in no position to recommend any software as I am still looking for a better solution myself, but I don't think itunes does it for me.
iTunes on a PC is a bit of a hog. You need iTunes, it uses QuickTime to process the audio and the result is fed to the Win audio engine.
The biggest impact on sound quality is probably the driver.
I would suggest to try a media player supporting WASAPI/exclusive.

Examples are Foobar, MusicBee, JRiver Media Center.
My personal preference is JRiver as it sound good and offers a very flexible interface in the process too.

If you install iTunes on Windows it leaves a bunch of processes around that deal with Apple Software updates, iPod server, iPhone service, etc. These all take up resources on the computer and potentially degrade sound quality and/or cause glitches due to underruns.
On occasion, I have to install iTunes on my audio PC to load music into a friend's iPod and iPhone. As soon as I am done with this exercise I immediately unintall the software, lest it work its evil wiles.

did you switch to? and how long of a run?
...with my current favorite, a black generic USB cable of the same length. It says "Foxconn AWM 2725 VW-1 USB Cable Rev 2.0 28 AWG." The Foxconn has a ferrite on the computer end and I have actually put two more on it.
When I went to audition the Ayre QB-9 DAC I brought along this cable, and at least to my ears it was superior to the Synergistic they were using. I have another white generic one but this is my favorite so far. I would like to try others...thinking about the Cardas Clear. The Belkin interested me as it is a continued favorite of one of the TAS reviewers.
But I am not absolute about this. It is all system matching, not what a reviewer says or what you spent.
Steve
You may have mentioned it before but what DAC have you decided on? Did you get the QB-9 or another brand, and how do you like it? Thanks.
but am interested in an Ayre, Weiss or Wavelength.
The problem is hearing before I buy. I know the Ayre beats the HRT, but have not heard the others (though I did hear the Wavelength Brick, I think I want to aim a bit higher than that model).
Steve
How do you have any time to actually listen to music?
