I have no issue using another cable. My question is more about which is a better interface. Firewire/USB to a digital converter and then to a DAC or Lynx to a DAC.
Follow Ups:
While there may be strong disagreement, particularly from manufacturers who have chosen one interface over another, I think the real answer is that it all depends upon the implementation and that optical, properly done, should be indistinguishable from USB, which should be indistinguishable from firewire, etc. I know of an engineer from Benchmark who has said that they don't detect a difference between optical and USB output on their DAC, which is designed with low noise and neutrality as primary goals. Whether or not the interface makes a more significant difference in DACs designed with a signature sound as an objective, I can't say.

He's funny guy - what else can I say. BTW, he probably meant that measurements were no different between two inputs.
But then, he's not the first to be unaware of how company's products actually behave when listened to, as opposed to how he thinks they should behave. I believe both Conrad Johnson and Bryston insisted at the time that their amplifiers are unaffected by power cord replacement. The same for Van Alstine, with his DAC supposedly being "immune" to different transports.
Not to mention that both USB and Toslink inputs on Benchmark sound noticeable inferior to SPDIF and AES/EBU - the same exact behavior as many other DACs. Whether the part before DAC plays into this (difference between quality of soundcard's outputs, between SPDIF and Toslink cables) is another question.
I'll leave it up to you to tell him what he meant, he said they couldn't hear a difference. I believe him. I also believe Bryston and Conrad Johnson's assessment of the effect of mains cable. YMMV.

Such a wonderfully politically correct and neutral answer.
I may refer back to that in the future.

I'm trying. I have no doubt that some will read my disagreement, take disagreement as challenge, interpret challenge as offense, and ultimately feel it personally. One can only question the confidence of their own positions.

"One can only question the confidence of their own positions."
ah yes, the old 'purple hair' example.
If someone says you have purple hair, you're likely to laugh, 'cause you know it's not true.
