Yes that would be the reason.
How can this be done??

I just read the thread below, and have a better idea of the source of your concern.Just to be clear, Steve has stated that he has no idea what part of Core Audio is causing the issues he claims, and therefore has no idea if it actually IS Core Audio, in my opinion.
Other than the SRC issues, I'm not aware of anyone else making claims that CoreAudio needs to be bypassed. Not for no reason is Mac OS X used exclusively by some of the leading pro audio firms.
I'm working on memory of posts from more than 4 months ago, but as I recall, Steve ran some tests after he purchased his first Mac (a Mini as I recall). Based on the differences detected between testing solely with his two DACs (and a not inconsiderable assumption that one of those was jitter-free), he claimed to know that 30% of the sound quality issues were attributable to Core Audio, and that the other 70% was due to jitter.
There could so many other variables affecting sound quality as to make that claim rather inconclusive without more evidence, IMO.
Here's a clue - no one else has made any such attribution - at least that I'm aware of.
YMMV,

And 70% due to Jitter....Hmmmmm
Somehow I knew that word would come into play.

I would look at some of the Hackintosh sites. They dive deep into the OS. I have been able to use them for many things I wanted to fix or do on my G5. If anyone would know they would.

I'm not aware of any user configurable options for bypassing CoreAUdio.
Amarra is an expensive way to do it. Rumours are that Audiofile Engineering has a cheaper high quality music player in Beta, apparently based on their Wave Editor audio editing software, which incidentally uses the best sounding SRC available on the Mac (that I'm aware of) - the iZotope 64-bit SRC+ (which Amarra will offer soon as well I think).
So, that's the best way I know of to bypass aspects of CoreAudio that concern audiophiles, use someone else's code.
Are you using iTunes for playback now, or just curious?

I use a variety of software for playback, iTunes, VLC and XBMC. Just depends on what flavor of music I want to listen too at the moment.

It doesn't have music player features yet, but check out the trial period of Wave Editor. See what you think of the sound. If you like it, get in line with the rest of us awaiting a cheaper alternative to Amarra.

I am going to download it now and have a listen.

I don't think Amarra bypasses Core Audio without hardware. Amarra sounds different than Wave Editor which also does not bypass Core Audio. I used to use Wave Editor to play music before the new music programs arrived.
You mean one of the 'listed' DAC's that Amarra supports?
The web site shows a list of 'some' DAC's but goes on to say that other FW and USB DAC's are supported. How would one know if their DAC is truly using Amarra to bypass Coreaudio or not? If the DAC does not it wont work-or-some other method?
Another question....just out of curiosity. If someone used Boot-camp will Windows use CoreAudio as well?

Hardware would be Amarra 4.
Boot-camp allows you to run Windows on another partition. No OSX here.
My understanding is that Amarra only takes advantage of internal EQ available with Model4, but the primary sonic benefits of Amarra are realizable with most interfaces and DACs that it supports.
I didnt use the Model4 at RMAF, and yet when I did iTunes versus Amarra demos for attendees, they all heard the improvement of Amarra.
I dont sell Amarra BTW. I just use it.
