In Reply to: RE: What DACs can play 24/176 or 24/192? posted by jpbeckaudio on October 10, 2009 at 11:36:50
Well the Weiss DACII for one, Metric Halo, Berkeley, Digital Audio Denamrk , I am sure there are thousands more, I would look at how they are connected, their implementation as well as just the frequencies they can sample.
Follow Ups:
So, for example, if the website for the PS Audio Digital Link III DAC says it can play 24/192, it doesn't mean it can play 24/192 unless you do it "just so"?
Nor will many others, and they often obscure this point of their USB implementation's limitations, as well as keeping the waters muddied with regard to playing natively versus upsampling to a particular spec.
To play this format you need an output on the computer and an input on the DAC able to do 24/192
SPDIF or AES/EBU: check the specs of both your sound card and the DAC
Firewire: there is no standard for audio over Firewire, check the spec’s of the DAC as the manufacturer supplies the driver
USB: all major OS support the USB audio 1 standard (native mode driver).
Check the DAC
- a lot of USB DAC’s use a drop in chip supporting 16/48 max.
- some support up to 24/96, this is the max supported by USB audio 1
- very few support 24/192. As this is not supported by the USB audio standard 1, it requires a driver developed by the manufacturer.
If a DAC is capable of 24/192 and have different inputs, not all of them might be capable of 24/192. A Bryston BDA does 24/192 but the USB input is limited to 16/48
