I just read the article in the September issue of The Absolute Sound. I have been on the Tidal website and it really doesn't tell me anything.
If I order the $20 a month subscription will I be able to find an album, not a track from an album but the entire album, and add it to my Roon library to play whenever I want and is it permanent in my library for repeat listening?
I am fairly literate in a lot of "computer audio" applications and gear but this streaming software is a mystery to me.
Follow Ups:
"If I order the $20 a month subscription will I be able to find an album, not a track from an album but the entire album, and add it to my Roon library to play whenever I want and is it permanent in my library for repeat listening?"Yes, so long as you maintain your Tidal subscription. If you let it lapse, those Tidal albums go away. Poof! No, you cannot pirate download a batch of albums then cancel your subscription and expect your downloaded Tidal albums to remain ;-)
As a side note, if you have the Tidal App (not Roon) on your smartphone, you can download Tidal albums to your phone so those albums reside and can be played locally from the phone. You're not 'streaming' the music over your cellular data network, and you're not burning up your cellular data plan. This is generically called "offline listening" and here's the idea behind it and an example scenario:
You're going on a road trip and camping in the boonies and you want a bunch of albums to listen to.
- While at home on your strong speedy and free wifi, download a batch of Tidal albums to your smartphone.
- While you're on your trip, play those Tidal albums that now reside on your phone rather than burning up your cellular data plan to 'stream'.
- Maybe you have an unlimited data plan. But, you have spotty or no cellular service along your trip and camp site. No worries, the music resides locally on your phone.
You have to login to Tidal periodically so the albums downloaded to your smartphone remain authorized. By periodically I mean maybe once a month or so, I don't recall exactly.
P.S. Pretty much all streaming services offer a 'offline listening' mode with some variation on how they manage it.

Thanks guys, sounds pretty simple.
Any difference in sound quality - Tidal versus ripped CDs that populate my Roon library?
Ripped CDs and Tidal streaming are both 'CD quality' but Tidal seems to be ever so slightly brighter sounding to me, in my system. It's not 'brighter' in s bad way, just tonally a little 'brighter'.YMMV.

I find that Tidal Masters unfolded to 24/96 or 24/88.2 generally sound better than RBCD. BTW, if you have a DAC with a digital output connected to a digital recorder, it is possible to record permanent digital copies from the Tidal stream in real time.

I have to admit that my only MQA DAC was a low-end Meridian which to me didn't sound all that great no matter what I fed it.
Isn't the first MQA unfolding to 24/96 or 24/88.2 done in software like Roon? I believe this is the case so wouldn't it be possible to use something like a USB-to-SPDIF converter to capture the first MQA unfold out of the SPDIF connector? Then send it to a digital recorder? I'm thinking something like the Wyred4Sound uLink. There are several others too.

Exactly, capture just the first unfold after it's decoded in Roon. Pass it to the recorder through a converter or through the digital output of a non-MQA DAC. I don't think it's feasible to capture the second unfold.
As already stated yes, but the album in Roon is being rented and will be delivered over the internet as long as your Tidal account is in good standing and Tidal still has the album in their library. So think of it more like a bookmark that sits within Roon.

"If you are the owner of a new stereophonic system, this record will play with even more brilliant true-to-life fidelity. In short, you can purchase this record with no fear of its becoming obsolete in the future."
I discovered it was a snap to integrate Tidal with Roon. I hear no difference in sound quality between Tidal and my ripped CDs that are in my Roon library. I now have more music than I can listen to at my disposal. I have taken it another step further by purchasing a PS Audio Directstream Junior so that I can take advantage of the Tidal MQA selections.
I am in Hog Heaven!

Yes, that's exactly what you'll be able to do.
Browse or search Tidal for the albums you like. Drag the album(s) into the album category in Tidal. Log into your Tidal account via Roon (it'll ask if you have a Tidal account). The albums you selected will appear in your Roon Library with an icon designating that they're Tidal albums (and MQA if that applies). You can listen to the full album (or selected tracks if desired) as often as you want.
