Gordon likes Macs and OSX. A USB cable connection directly to a Mac Mini or preferably to a MacBook Pro ( less EMF ) Now for my other friends here, don't get upset; again these are Gordon's preferred methods for demoing his stuff. I have the Crimson and have owned and listened to the Cosecant. This method works very well for his DACs.
Add a Thunderbolt drive for your music library.
Again, this is what Gordon uses at shows. He consistently gets high ratings for his demos.

Thanks Steve, I have a 2009 White Macbook in storage I can dust off.
Well see how it goes, you possibly just saved me $1000 :)
Thank you
Ok, got the Macbook out of storage, plugged it in.
There's power coming in but power button doesn't do anything. Dead!
I guess back to windows...
Battery is probably bad,but should start. Pull the battery.

Will not cost much to try it, Just $50 for Audirvana but IMO no way close to Server 2012 JPlay. I have done both.
If you're more familiar with apple, JRiver makes an OS version that works great. My Asus laptop cost me approx. $600 and works like a charm. I'm using an Ayre QB9 and it sounds super. JRiver makes JRemote for the Iphone/Ipad and Gizmo for the Android/tab. Both are killer and lets you access your ripped music and movies from anyplace in the house.
After that, I would put my money downstream (preamp/speakers/etc.) It's pretty hard to make a nice sounding system sound bad with even a half decent computer audio subsystem. Heck, I was shocked about just how good my original xp latop/hiface and 20 foot crappy cable run to my preamp sounded.
Yea, I like JRiver as well and JRemote.
The 2009 White MacBook should work fine. Use an external Firewire drive for your music. The faster CPU, memory, etc. sounds better on a Mac. The only real issue is the amount of RAM. 4 GB would be the smallest recommended, but 8 GB would be much better. I have 8GB in my 2009 MacBook Pro that my wife still uses and it worked very well with my Crimson.
I can't get the MacBook going.
But I can get a used 2005 MacMini (no power adapter/charger) for $50
Is the hardware specs on this enough to play on?
I would not get a non Intel based Mac Mini for your audio setup. For one thing, it will not run the latest Mac OS X operating system and you will run into issues with availability of compatible software on that old machine running older OS.
I would look to 2009 or newer.

Thanks for the info Abe.
"Use an external Firewire drive for your music."
Your old MB also has Firewire. If you use external storage better to not use USB. On the desktop system you can use a small SSD for the OS and a larger internal for storage also.
Hey Bob,
Good suggestions. I think our friend should get his feet wet with what he has at home. Then from there, maybe a Windows Server :)
Appreciate all your help. Thanks
I was actually thinking of using an external USB.
I'm surprised it is better to use an internal drive + ssd
than using an external USB.
What's the problem with using other USB devices?
IRQ sharing issues?

You do not want anything else on the USB bus. I shut everything off on my MB that is not being used. The only functional USB is the PPA card. Your MB does have Fire Wire if you really want an external drive.
Hi Bob,
Is it better to unplug the USB keyboard/mouse too?
and just control the unit remotely.
Just wondering which is the lesser of two evils.
Other USB devices or enabling the network card...

That is what I do. After everything is set up and running
I turn off USB and just about everything else in the BIOS.
Steve,
I use my PC for dual use / audio and video. My system is connected to a Marquee 9500 projection system and I need a windows based OS for the front end. MACs would not address the software for the application. MadVr has been the best video render to date and is included in Jriver. I use several programs for my desired needs. Can a MAC do this?
The original poster and myself would like to upgrade for better sonic results. For me it has to fit my needs as a dual use component.
